EVALUATION - Barbican Theatre

The Musical Theatre’s performance in May 2015 on Physical Theatre generally focuses on women’s rights to which scenes in the performance shows representation.

During rehearsal times for the Barbican Theatre, my best lesson is when we had to rehearse the whole piece of the performance, wherein I had to remember everything in its order to which in a way it is a good way to know what scene we are performing without somewhat forgetting. The approach to class and levels of discipline are exceptional as I will listen to the director where exactly where to go. In addition to this, the domestic abuse performance was my favourite part of the piece. This is because the scene in particular gave me a sense of purpose for which the piece in particular can relate on women’s rights, and the abuse gave a dramatic effect. The only thing I would say that needs improving on is when in the domestic abuse scene I need to keep in time in the piece to the piece and go over the video on my phone to memorise what action to perform, and have more time to rehearse the scene to get it perfected. Other than that, I believe that the piece has no downfall. The memory throughout the piece is exceptional to which I can remember everybody’s action and moves myself.

I absorbed the feedback and mistakes I have made in the rehearsals from peers and my teacher. My timing is sometimes the least of my worries, and I am able to see my individual skills from people in my group although I do not show my potential. There are times that I give myself a target in one particular scene; timing and movement, but throughout the scenes I believe that I am performing well. If I was to find ways to improve, I would have to make effort to give some ideas of my own to the class if we are performing the piece as a whole.

The piece of the domestic abuse scene shows development as the scenes continues. Firstly, the group came on to deliver their ideas for the first intro, when I meet Sonia in the piece. Then, I developed the piece further on by giving ideas such as, when the girls are sitting on their chairs and I tap Sonia on the shoulder and as soon as she looks behind, I duck down and crouch. When me and Sonia are on the chair standing up the idea was we hug, but then it gets hazy when I attempt to touch her inappropriately and start to pull her hair. Furthermore, after I beat her on the ground, I gave more ideas that I grab her off the ground and then I flip her over. We used these ideas to show how women cope with domestic abuse.

However, despite the ideas being used for the piece there were parts of them that were rejected. Although I felt that my ideas were not being appreciated, I learnt that everybody are different human creatures who have views and opinions of their own and will show disapproval. I could see that this was better for the piece because the ideas that the group put together created a formation, although I still have further ideas that could have been put into the piece, but I will have to put up with the piece as it is.

The movements I would say that I found easy is when I had to jump to one chair. What we had to practise is the timing, and I managed to fit into the space just fine. I was aware of what people was doing and were they were going so I had to adapt myself to keep out of their way because that is an issue when it comes to performance. I was able to complete the moves to my ability and I did not needed extra breath. I believe you do need agility to perform well in performances but I believe you cannot perform well on an empty stomach, because you are likely to not perform well to your abilities. I had to be aware on what others were doing so I am more vigilant on which part to come on and the timing is spot on.

Personally, I believe the message to women’s rights was majorly effective, and the moment that had the impact was when we play “man says” and domestic abuse, because those moments show how women are weak in those scenes. The only thing I would say that is not effective is the fact that we do not show those effective moments through our face, via facial expression. We had our moments were we lost character, but nonetheless my confidence remained during the performance. I wanted the audience to think that they know the purpose of the plot.

Before we perform at the Barbican, the improvements that can be made if we can have more rehearsal times, make sure that everybody is on time and present in the rehearsals. We could perform it to secondary school so they would have an understanding of what physical theatre is about as I have done this during secondary school myself. There is still more time for improval in my opinion because I believe we can make this piece work, but the class needs to engage and focus, meaning the beneficial part will be that there is more chance people won’t be making mistakes, and we could perform at National Theatre.

Complicite - DANCE

SHOWCASE - evaluation

Following the May 2015 showcase for Yr 1 Musical Theatre students, I thought it was an average performance, although the showcase had it's shortcomings so the evaluation that this is written by me is showing the musical number that I have appeared in and the opinions of how each number had worked out.

Musical number appearance for Rafa.

Chicago - "All that Jazz"
Fame - "Bring on tomorrow"
Bugsy Malone - "So you wanna be a boxer"
SIster Act - "Raise your voice"

"All that jazz"
The song, alongside the dance was formed in a triangle, pyramid shape for the dance and song. Nancy is the only person in the song who sings the first part of the solo, and then the class sings the rest of the song as a whole. I thought the dance and song was in time with everything else.

"Bring on tomorrow"
One of my favourite song had its pros and cons. The cons of it being that one parts of the song was sung by mistake. However, despite the downfall, the song I believed had some good notes to which I thought it was a good piece, although next time there will be room for improvement.

"So you wanna be a boxer"

During the part of my solo "So you wanna be a boxer", the song had its downfall. The beginning part of my solo was a good start until it came to a point where I started to notice the sound had went off in the tech room. Despite the sound coming off, I still carried on with my solo because I would not want the audience to see the song's downfall, and Sean used the piano to carry on my solo. Due to technical difficulties, the song had to be put on hold much to the frustration of the other people of the audience.

However, once the tech team managed to resolve the issue, the solo still carried on with me and the class singing the parts. Although frustrated with the tech team's shortcoming, I managed to perform the song well, but I thought the first round would have been much better if the there was no technical difficulties.

"Raise your voice"
Raise your voice is the showcase finale. This song personally is my favourite song to end the showcase. I thought that this song was very harmonious, and rhythmic. However, I also had my doubts that the song would have its downfall. The costumes that we had to wear for the song are black and white, with the appearance of an nun. This creation had required careful cutting with the production team. In conclusion to the song, I believed that the song came out an major success.

The showcase - PROS and CONS (January 2015)

From the previous showcase, we have written down what we thought was our main strengths for the showcase. One of them being was the fact that we was the mood and energy in the finale, being supportive of each other as a class, being energetic in "Revolting Children" and we managed to stay in character at all times during the showcase which goes to show a sign that we managed to make the show successful, and this is through the amount of time we spent during rehearsals.
However, despite the strengths, there were many weaknesses in which there were many downfalls to the showcase. An example is the timing was a major issue as there we many people going either fast or slow on "Radio Gaga" and in "Masquerade" there were people going to their positions fast. In addition to this, there were many people not taking responsibility to their roles and other people seem to respect other people when they were given roles.
Although, there were strengths and failures in the showcase there is still room for the class to improve. As a class, we need to put more energy in rehersals, be more organised, be positive, and rehearse your lyrics to make sure the for the next showcase, we know our past mistake and prevent it from happening.

Domestic Abuse (Complicite)

This domestic complicite is part for our showcase we are performing for the Barbican Theatre. The people in our group for the performance is me, Sonia, Marta, Daria and Courtney. The abuser is me and the victim is Sonia; the story-line sees the beginning where I'am meeting Sonia along with her friends. Some of her friends believe the lover to be a good boyfriend, while the other believes that he she should not trust him. The abuse comes to the end where it is playful but really it is abuse, and the victim states that everything is okay by pushing away her friends.

For the scene, in order to get an idea on what the domestic reality is actually like, this had required me to do a lot of research and watch videos of women who suffer on the hands of domestic abuse and how they cope with the undeserved treatment they have to contain. Also, performance wise, the videos that I have been watching had given me a lot of ideas on how we could play the scene.

Some parts of the play we had formed as a group to make the performance. The performance also has items that would flow with the storyline and would make a perfect combination. For this domestic scene, the performance requires everything to be silent and there is a rhythm to where we are going for each part.

Masquerade dance

This dance was a past performance on Masquerade. This dance is our own as we had formed together this dance as our own idea for the past showcase. This dance also includes us singing while we are dancing. Dominique had formed this idea; first the dance as a whole class, then the first group perform; then us; then the last group. Afterwards, the group must go with their partners to then dance, and form a formation to end the song and the dance.

Bring on tomorrow

Deneille
We have arrived at a moment in our lives
When the future passes into out hands

Isabel
We can find out, are we really strong enough
To fulfill what the future demands

Rafa
We can stand on the edge
And look out into space
And be awed
By the wonders we see

Rafa, Courtney, Ada
We can all make a pledge
That the whole human race
Will become what we want it to be

Everyone
Bring on tomorrow
Let it shine
Like the sun coming up on a beautiful day
It's yours and mine

We can make a difference
It's not too late
Bring on tomorrow
We can't wait

Anne
Long, long ago in a world we never made
We were children who were making believe

Asher

Closing our eyes
We were travelers in air
To a land we would not want to leave

Daria
But the fairy tale land, fades away as we grow
And we all have to say our goodbyes

Rafa, Viktorija, Cagla, Daria
And we now understand, that this world that we know
Can be ours if we open our eyes

Everyone
Bring on tomorrow
Let it shine
Like the sun coming up on a beautiful day
It's yours and mine

We can make a difference
It's not too late

You know how people
have these little habits
That get you down. Like Bernie.
Bernie like to chew gum.
No, not chew. POP.
So I came home this one day
And I am really irritated, and I'm
looking for a bit of sympathy
and there's Bernie layin'
on the couch, drinkin' a beer
and chewin'. No, not chewin'.
Poppin'. So, I said to him,
I said, "you pop that
gum one more time..."
and he did.
So I took the shotgun off the wall
and I fired two warning shots...
...into his head.

[GIRLS]
He had it coming
He had it coming
He only had himself to blame
If you'd have been there
If you'd have heard it
I betcha you would
Have done the same!

[ANNIE (Spoken)]
I met Ezekiel Young from
Salt Lake city about two years ago
and he told me he was single
and we hit it off right away.
So, we started living together.
He'd go to work, he'd come home, I'd
fix him a drink, We'd have dinner.
And then I found out,
"Single" he told me?
Single, my ass. Not only
was he married
...oh, no, he had six wives.
One of those Mormons, you know. So that
night, when he came home, I fixed him
his drink as usual.
You know, some guys just can't hold
their arsenic.

[LIZ,ANNIE,JUNE,MONA]
Hah! He had it coming
He had it coming
He took a flower
In its prime
And then he used it
And he abused it
It was a murder
But not a crime!

[VELMA AND HUNYAK]
Pop, six, squish, uh-uh
Cicero, Lipschitz

[JUNE (Spoken)]
Now, I'm standing in the kitchen
carvin' up the chicken for dinner,
minding my own business,
and in storms my husband Wilbur,
in a jealous rage.
"You been screwin' the milkman,"
he says. He was crazy
and he kept screamin',
"you been screwin the milkman."
And then he ran into my knife.
He ran into my knife ten times.."

[ALL]
If you'd have been there
If you'd have seen it
I betcha you would have done the same!

[HUNYAK (Spoken)]
Mit keresek, йn itt? Azt mondjбk,
hogy a hнres lakem lefogta a fйrjemet йn meg
lecsaptam a fejйt. De nem igaz, йn бrtatlan
vagyok. Nem tudom miйrt mondja
Uncle Sam, hogy йn tettem. Probбltam
a rendхrsйgen megmagyarбzni de nem йrtettйk meg...

[JUNE (Spoken)]
Yeah, but did you do it?

[HUNYAK]
UH UH, not guilty!

[VELMA]
My sister, Veronica and
I had this double act
and my husband, Charlie,
traveled around with us.
Now, for the last number in
our act, we did 20 acrobatic tricks
one two three four,five...splits, spread eagles,
back flips,flip flops,
one right after the other.
Well, this one night we were in the hotel Cicero,
the three of us,
boozin' and
havin' a few laughs
when we run out of ice.
So I went out to get some.
I come back, open the door
and there's Veronica and
Charlie doing Number Seventeen-
the spread eagle.
Well, I was in such a state of shock,
I completely blacked out.I can't remember a thing.
It wasn't until later,
when I was washing the blood off my hands
I even knew they were dead.
They had it coming
They had it coming
They had it coming all along
I didn't do it
But if I'd done it
How could you tell me that I was wrong?

[VELMA]
They had it coming

[GIRLS]
They had it coming

[VELMA]
They had it coming

[GIRLS]
They had it coming

[VELMA]
They had it coming

[GIRLS]
They took a flower

[VELMA]
All along

[GIRLS]
In its prime

[VELMA]
I didn't do it

[GIRLS]
And then they used it

[VELMA]
But if I'd done it

[GIRLS]
And they abused it

[VELMA]
How could you tell me

[GIRLS]
It was a murder

[VELMA]
That I was wrong?

[GIRLS]
But not a crime!

[MONA]
I loved Alvin Lipschitz
more than I can possibly say.
He was a real artistic guy...
sensitive... a painter.
But
He was always trying
to find himself.
He'd go out every night
looking for himself
and on the way
he found Ruth,
Gladys,
Rosemary and Irving.
I guess you can say we broke
up because of artistic differences.
He saw himself as alive
and I saw him dead.

[ALL]
The dirty bum, bum, bum, bum, bum
The dirty bum, bum, bum, bum, bum

[LIZ,ANNIE,MONA]
They had it comin'

[VELMA,JUNE,HUNYAK]
They had it comin'

[LIZ,ANNIE,MONA]
They had it comin'

[VELMA,JUNE,HUNYAK]
They had it comin'

[LIZ,ANNIE,MONA]
They had it comin'

[VELMA,JUNE,HUNYAK]
They had it comin'

[LIZ,ANNIE,MONA]
All along

[VELMA,JUNE,HUNYAK]
All along
'Cause if they used us
'Cause if they used us And they abused us
And they abused us

[LIZ,ANNIE,MONA]
How could you tell us

[VELMA,JUNE,HUNYAK]
How could you tell us That we were wrong?
That we were wrong?
He had it coming
He had it coming
He only had
Himself
To blame.
If you'd have been there
If you'd have seen it
I betcha
You would
Have done
The same!

Chicago the Musical - ALL THAT JAZZ

Come on, babe
Why don't we paint the town?
And all that jazz

I'm gonna rouge my knees
And roll my stockings down
And all that jazz

Start the car
I know a whoopee spot
Where the gin is cold
But the piano's hot!

It's just a noisy hall
Where there's a nightly brawl
And all that jazz

And all that jazz

And all that jazz

Slick your hair
and wear you buckle shoes
And all that jazz

I hear that Father Dip
Is gonna blow the blues
And all that jazz,

Hold on, hon'
We're gonna bunny hug
I bought some aspirin
Down at United Drug

In case you shake apart
And wanna brand new start
To do that- jazz!

Find a flask
We're playing fast and loose
And all that jazz

Oh, you're gonna see your
Sheba shimmy shake
And all that jazz

Oh, she's gonna shimmy
Till her garters break
And all that jazz

Show her where to park her girdle
Oh, her mother's blood'd curdle
(If she'd hear her baby squeal)
For all that jazz

All that jazz
Come on, babe
Why don't we paint the town?
And all that jazz
(And all that jazz)

I'm gonna rouge my knees
And roll my stockings down
And all that jazz
(And all that jazz)

Start the car
I know a whoopee spot
Where the gin is cold
But the piano's hot!

It's just a noisy hall
Where there's a nightly brawl
And all that jazz

No, I'm no one's wife
But, oh, I love my life
And all that jazz
That jazz

Raise your voice.
(Gloria in excelsis Deo)
Raise your voice.
(Gloria in excelsis Deo)

This song, Raise your voice, is a very difficult song in which it requires focus and timing. There are many nuns in the performance, and in order to pull of this performance this would need practising and belting. Me and my class had watched this video and in my opinion I actually like the song finding it catchy and feeling the song at the same rhythm. What make the song very hard is the fact that it would be difficult to know when your cue is.
